We recognize the importance of a safe and strong community. To this end, Ocean dedicates time and resources to various local charities.

YMCA

Halifax YMCA

The Halifax YMCA, serving Halifax since 1855, "Works to develop the body, mind and spirit" of men, women and children through fitness, sports, leadership and education programs and childcare. Its foundation lies in a desire to "Foster a love of humankind," by promoting respect, honesty, volunteerism and self-responsibility.

Big Cove Camp

Big Cove Camp, run by the YMCA, is located in Merigomish Harbour in Pictou County. Big Cove offers boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 17 the opportunity to build confidence, trust and a feeling of social responsibility while enjoying recreational and social activities. Canoeing, out trips, sports, drama and earth education are a few of the activities offered during the program.

Bonny Lea Farm

"Bonny Lea Farm is committed to empowering special needs individuals by providing opportunities to experience faith, self respect, love for one another, dignity, integrity, productivity, and responsible community living."

Located primarily in Chester, Bonny Lea Farm provides vocational training and residential programming for men and women who are mentally, physically, emotionally or behaviourally challenged. Bonny Lea Enterprises offers individuals the opportunity to work in the Herb Garden or Barn, contributing to the community while acquiring important skills.


Phoenix House

Phoenix House is dedicated in supporting youth to "break the cycle of homelessness and find a path from the street". Since 1984, Phoenix has been targeting homeless and at-risk youth between the ages of 16 and 24 through seven different programs including an emergency shelter in Halifax and a long term structured living program. Phoenix helps youth develop the personal skills necessary to live independently in the community.

Adsum Women and Children

Adsum has been reaching out to Halifax women and their children in various facets since 1983. Adsum currently has three facilities. Adsum House is an emergency shelter which has provided a safe refuge for more than 10,000 women and children since opening twenty years ago. Adsum Court is a 15-unit affordable apartment building. Adsum Centre opened January 2004 and provides support and regular programming to women in a residential setting.

Shad Valley International

Shad Valley International

Since 1981 Shad Valley International has been helping motivated senior high school students "to find an edge in the competitive and knowledge-based world of tomorrow." Students accepted into Shad spend the month of July in an intense residential program at one of 11 host universities across the country. The program integrates entrepreneurship, science and engineering together and aims to develop both the individual's personal and interpersonal skills through lectures, workshops, group projects and recreational activities.

Following the program, about half of the Shad Valley students receive work placements in August with Shad partner companies. Ocean has been providing Shad students co-op terms for the past five years.
